Columbus is no stranger to constantly changing weather conditions. Every year, the city deals with tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, and blizzards. This year’s hodgepodge of weather conditions is no different from previous years with one notable exception: according to Randy Ludlow of the Columbus Dispatch, the wintry blast last December 6 was the snowiest on record so far.

After another mixed bag of wintry precipitation across central Ohio today, the coldest weather of the season could be waiting.

The Columbus area enjoyed sunshine yesterday that helped melt the mess from Friday’s wintry blast that left 5.1 inches of snow at Port Columbus, making it the snowiest Dec. 6 on record.

But the respite will last only one day. The National Weather Service issued a winter-weather advisory for much of Ohio from 6 a.m. today to 4 a.m. Monday.

One to 2 inches of snow could fall this morning before switching over to sleet and freezing rain this afternoon, leaving a possible deposit of one-tenth of an inch of ice.

With the coming of harsher winter conditions, locals who had their homes winterized ahead of time are sure to be reaping the benefits of their efforts. Home winterization does not mean making homes impenetrable to winter damage, but rather, reducing the chances of serious structural damage when winter strikes. Also, good winterization efforts for roof and house siding in Columbus, Ohio mean a consistently warm home for the rest of the winter.

Meanwhile, those who were unable to winterize their homes are likely to find damage in some of its components during the season, and one element that is particularly vulnerable is wood siding. Wood siding is prone to moisture penetration after severe snowstorms, which can then lead to cracking and rotting. The only way to prevent wood siding damage from worsening is through good maintenance and repair. However, when a wood siding has reached the end of its service life, homeowners can consider installing vinyl siding in Columbus, Ohio instead, as this type of siding is better at standing up to extreme weather conditions. Other smart siding choices include insulated siding and fiber cement siding.

Erratic winter conditions are expected in Columbus, Ohio this year, making house components vulnerable, and maintenance and repair work necessary. If new siding installation is required, homeowners will benefit greatly from relying on trustworthy siding installation specialists like those from Ohio Exteriors.
